General Questions

Are real-life French and French taught in language app or at school THAT different?

Yes, they definitely are!

To give you an overall explanation, real-life French tends to be more colloquial and informal than what is typically taught in textbooks or language courses. This can include the use of slang, idiomatic expressions, and regional accents or dialects, which may not be covered in traditional language learning resources.

Second, real-life French often involves a faster pace of speech, which can make it difficult for non-native speakers to understand. In addition, French speakers may use different intonations or emphasis on certain words, which can change the meaning of a sentence.

Third, real-life French can vary depending on the context and the speaker's background, such as their age, gender, education level, and social class. For example, a conversation with a friend or a family member may involve more informal language and slang, while a conversation with a colleague or a stranger may require more formal language and polite expressions.

Finally, real-life French can also be influenced by cultural norms and social etiquette, which may not be explicitly taught in language courses. For example, French speakers may have different expectations regarding greetings, small talk, and personal space than speakers of other languages.

Overall, while traditional French language learning resources can provide a solid foundation in grammar and vocabulary, exposure to real-life French through immersive experiences and interactions with native speakers is essential to develop a more nuanced and authentic understanding of the language.

What are the "A0" and "B1" levels? What does that mean?

The CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which is a system used to describe language ability.

There are six levels in the CEFR: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Each level has a set of language skills and abilities that a person should be able to do in that language.

Think of it like climbing a staircase. A1 is the lowest step, and C2 is the highest step. The higher you climb, the more advanced your language skills are.

Let's say you're learning French. Here's what each level means:

A1: You can understand and use simple everyday phrases, like "Bonjour" (hello) and "Comment ça va?" (how are you?)

A2: You can understand sentences and phrases related to everyday situations, like ordering food at a restaurant or asking for directions.

B1: You can understand the main points of a conversation or text on familiar topics, like your hobbies or your job.

B2: You can understand and express yourself on a wide range of topics, and you can communicate fluently and spontaneously in most situations.

C1: You can understand and express yourself on complex topics, and you can use the language effectively for academic or professional purposes.

C2: You have near-native proficiency and can understand and express yourself on any topic, with a high degree of accuracy and fluency.

What teaching method is used in the course?
